A colonoscopy is a procedure in which a lighted tube is inserted through the rectum and advanced through the entire length of the large bowel. This procedure is done for both screening and diagnostic purposes. During your procedure, polyps may be removed or biopsies may be taken.
Screening colonoscopies continue to be recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) beginning at age 45 for African Americans and 50 for all other groups. Recently, the American Cancer Society changed their recommendation to age 45 for all Americans (or people living within the USA). Some insurance companies will begin covering colorectal cancer screening at age 45.
An EGD is a procedure in which a lighted tube is inserted through the mouth and advanced to the second portion of the small bowel. This procedure is typically completed for diagnostic or surveillance puroposes and biopsies may be taken.
A flexible sigmoidoscopy is a procedure in which a lighted tube is inserted through the rectum and advanced to the distal transverse colon (about half way through the large bowel). This procedure is typically completed for diagnostic purposes.
